ESPN analysts who had been critical of Jason Quigley’s performance in his NABF middleweight title bout with Glen Tapia have rowed back in light of new of the Ballybofey man’s injury.
Quigley defeated Tapia by unanimous decision in Indio on Thursday-week last to win his first pro title and move to 13-0.
Quigley looked to be on his way to another inside-the-distance win but he was inhibited by an injury to his right hand that has since been described by medics in Los Angeles as a ‘one in ten million’ injury.
Quigley underwent corrective surgery on Friday and will be out of action until the autumn.
Last night, Bernardo Osuna and Bernard Hopkins were back on ESPN and returned to briefly discuss Quigley.
Osuna led the discussion as he remarked to Hopkins: “The most impressive thing is that not you, not I, not Teddy – we’re talking about almost a hundred years of boxing experience – could figure out that the man was injured. He masked it very well.”
Hopkins, who has a minority share in Golden Boy Promotions, said: “That is courage, and that is a veteran move, and that is experience. And I give him a lot of props for doing that.
“Big respect for him for pulling it out. For him to still pull the fight out, it’s amazing his ‘courage’. For him to do that, and still keep cool in the fight. His right hand looked like an eight-ounce glove. And he fought like that. That’s a lot of courage. That’s a lot of heart.”
The duo noted how Quigley barely threw the right hand after picking up the injury.
