Large crowd expected in Raphoe tonight for Ulster Bank protest

A large crowd is expected in Raphoe tonight to protest at the planned closure of the local Ulster Bank branch.

Already more than 1,000 people have signed a petition calling for the outlet to remain open.

However, Deputies Pat the Cope Gallagher and Pearse Doherty were told by Ulster Bank officials that the decision to close a number of branches including Raphoe and Ardara in June will not be reversed.

Tonight’s meeting will take place in Raphoe Mart from 7.30pm.

More than 200 last week held a protest meeting at the mart to complain about the closures.

Tonight’s meeting is expected to be attended by a large crowd who fear the closure of the bank is another nail in the coffin of the town.
