The world-famous Donegal knitwear shop Kennedy of Ardara will close its doors after more than a century of welcoming locals and tourists in the heart of the town.

Owners Marie and Connell Kennedy announced their retirement yesterday to their loyal customers from all over the world who were both shocked and saddened by the news.

The shop will close its doors on April 30th and move all trading to the online store at www.kennedyirishsweaters.com

Kennedy of Ardara has been an iconic brand in the knitwear industry since it was established in 1902 by Connell Kennedy, the grandfather of current owners Marie and Connell.

In an online message, Marie and Connell thanked customers for their support and friendship over the years:  “We wish to thank the many loyal customers through the years who have visited our store from all over the world. We enjoyed the chats and banter and will always cherish fond memories of your visits.

“We hope our paths will continue to cross in the years ahead, and friendships remain.”

The long-established company is known for producing quality hand-knits, loomed garments and accessories which are sold all over the world. Visitors from the US and other countries flocked to the store in the heritage town of Ardara in search of clothing and souvenirs from Ireland.

The first Kennedy of Ardara store was based in the family home on Front Street Ardara, with a thriving factory at the back. The current shop opened in 1968 to keep up with high demands. Connell took up the reins as Managing Director in 1981.

Connell and Maria’s retirement will see the end of an era for the much-loved shop which welcomed and employed so many people over the years.

The Kennedy family will continue to welcome customers to their business through the online store from May onwards.
