The devastated mum of one of the teenagers who survived a horror crash that killed two of his best friends has told of her heartbreak.
Michelle McKenna said her son, one of three teenage survivors of Saturday’s tragedy on the Inishowen peninsula, is in a “stable” condition at Letterkenny University Hospital.
But she said he had lost “his two best buddies” on the road between Whitecastle and Quigley’s Point.
Nathan Farrell, 18, and Nathan Fullerton, 17, died as the five pals returned from a rural nightclub in nearby Redcastle to their hometown of Buncrana, some 35km away.
“My heart is broke,” a devastated Ms McKenna wrote on Facebook, calling for prayers for the two deceased and their injured pals.
Her appeal saw an outpouring of sympathy and prayers locally and around the world.
Among those who got in touch was the mother of another of the accident’s three survivors.
Jacky Boyd, whose son is being treated in Belfast, told Ms McKenna her heart was breaking for everyone involved in the tragedy.
She said: “Still in shock Michelle. We have very lucky boys. Mummy heart is breaking for the other mammies.”
Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to the single-vehicle accident which happened about 3.35am as it emerged that four out of five of the young men involved were not wearing seat-belts.
The friends had gathered for a final night-out to say goodbye to a pal leaving to live in Scotland.
A Garda source has confirmed that only one of the five was wearing a seatbelt and he was one of the three survivors.
They were taken to various hospitals including Letterkenny University Hospital and Altnegelvin Hospital in Derry.
Although none of their injuries are life-threatening, one of the young men was transferred to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast with suspected spinal injuries.
