Listen: ‘We wanted to put down a marker’ says Kilcar’s Mark McHugh

Mark McHugh admits that he woke up ‘nervous’ this morning – but will sleep easy tonight after Kilcar defeated Gaoth Dobhair in Towney.

Kilcar, beaten finalists in last year’s Donegal SFC, overcame Gaoth Dobhair 1-15 to 1-13 in a cracking Championship contest today having been three down at one stage only to score seven of the game’s next eight points.

“We were nervous this morning,” McHugh sighed after seeing his team take the win.

“We were worried about the proposition of Gaoth Dobhair. They’re a formidable team. I woke up edgy enough today. Even to get away with a point today, I’d have been happy, but we’re delighted to get the win.

“We were waiting for this day again, to try and make it right again. There are doubters there because we didn’t perform in the final so we wanted to put down a marker against one of the top teams in the county.”
