The ESB has committed to invest €1.8 million to upgrade the Clady power station.
Deputy Pat the Cope Gallagher has welcomed the investment into the facility which will ensure the facility is brought up to the highest possible standards.
Pat the Cope added that the Clady Hydro station is to undergo this refurbishment before the end of 2017.
This will involve improvement works on the intake gate, the 500m long penstock, generator and electrical components and replacement of the turbine governor.
The funding commitment will guarantee the future of the Clady Hydroelectric generation station well into the future, the station first came into operation in 1959 and has a current capacity of generating electricity for the equivalent of 3,000 houses.
The improvement works will on part commence immediately but overall will be complete by October.
Pat the Cope concluded by stating that the refurbishment works will create activity in the general area but more importantly it will secure the facility for the future generations and provide cheap clean electricity for the national grid.
