New Gaeltacht competition to attract Donegal competitors

A new inter-Gaeltacht competition, comprising sports and the arts, Aonach Tailteann, is set to attract competitors from across Donegal.

The event was launched in Ionad Cultúrtha an Phiarsaigh in Ros Muc, Conamara, on Sunday afternoon.

Caitlín Ní Chualáin, champion seannós singer and broadcaster with RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta was the special guest at the event, and information about the competition was given by Conamara Organiser Maitiú Ó Coimín from Indreabhán.

Donegal Organiser Áine Ní Bhreisleáin from Gaoth Dobhair. A website, www.tailteann.ie and social media accounts were also launched on the day.

Aonach Tailteann, is based on an ancient Celtic festival, that venerated the Gaelic sports and customs in celebration of the goddess Tailtiú.

The modern incarnation will aim to promote the Irish language, Gaeltacht sports, customs and arts, by bringing people from different Gaeltacht regions together .

There will be over 30 competitions for children and adults and it will be staged in Cois Fharraige in Galway and in Gaoth Dobhair in the Donegal Gaeltacht.

Among the events will be sea swimming, long jump, sprints.

The arts events will include sean-nós singing, recitation, sketches and a short story competition .

The two regional heats will take place on the bank holiday weekend in August. The Conamara heat on Saturday August 5th; with field events at CLG Micheál Breathnach in Indreabhán, swimming competions at Trá Mhór, Indreabhán and stage events being held in the Gaeltacht village as well.

The Donegal heat takes place on Monday 7th August, with events centred on Amharclann Ghaoth Dobhair,An Chrannóg and the beach at Machaire Gathlán.

Regional winners will proceed to the finals of Aonach Tailteann, which will be held in Conamara on Saturday 26th August.

Áine Ní Bhreisleáin said that the committee hope to encourage competititors to showcase the best their Gaeltacht region has to offer in terms of sporting and stage prowess and that many visitors will travel to Gaoth Dobhair for the August games.

Entry forms are available online and a registration and information day will be held in Indreabhán and Gaoth Dobhair next month.

I measc na n-imeachtaí beidh an snámh mara, an léim fhada, rith, an choraíocht Ghaelach, caitheamh sleá agus an cliathrás. Beidh imeachtaí ealaíon ann freisin, ina measc an amhránaíocht ar an sean-nós, aithriseoireacht, sceitseanna, agus comórtas gearrscéalta.

Beidh na babhtaí ceantair ar siúl ag tús mhí Lúnasa. Beidh babhta Chonamara ar siúl Dé Sathairn an 5 Lúnasa, agus imeachtaí lúthchleasaíochta ar siúl ar Pháirc na mBreathnach, imeachtaí snámha ar siúl ag an Trá Mhór, agus imeachtaí ardáin ar siúl in Indreabhán freisin.

Beidh babhta Thír Chonaill ar siúl in Amharclann Ghaoth Dobhair,An Chrannóg agus ar Thrá Mhachaire Gathlán.

Rachaidh buaiteoirí na mbabhtaí ceantair ar aghaidh go comórtas ceannais Aonach Tailteann i gConamara ar an 26 Lúnasa.

Dúirt Áine Ni Bhreisleáin go bhfuiltear ag súil go gcuirfidh na ceantair Ghaeltachta plúr na lúthchleasaithe, snámhaithe agus ealaíontóirí chun cinn agus go dtiocfaidh go leor iomaitheoirí go Gaoth Dobhair don chomórtas .

Tá foirmeacha iarratais ar fáil ar líne agus beidh lá eolais agus clárúcháin ar siúl i nGaoth Dobhair agus in Indreabhán an mhí seo chugainn.
