Donegal public asked to help get treatment for deaf dog

Animals In Need Donegal are launching an appeal for help towards the veterinary treatment of a sweet little deaf Collie dog who they rescued from Letterkenny Pound on Christmas Eve.

The dog’s fosterer named her Eve and noticed that she had a pronounced limp when she arrived, which a veterinary examination revealed was due to a fractured hip, believed to have been caused by an injury that happened some months before and had been left untreated.

On top of this, Eve is deaf.

The vet performed a very tricky, intricate operation on her leg and after a lengthy recovery period at the vets, she is finally back at her foster home, where she is getting 5-star treatment and lots of TLC.

An Animals In Need Spokesperson said ‘Eve has had a long road to recovery and has suffered greatly yet the veterinary staff said that no matter how many times they had to dress her wound or inject her, she never once snapped or growled at them.’

She continued ‘Her surgery and follow-up treatments amounted to about €1000, but Eve is such a lovely dog, we were determined to do everything possible to save her leg and we are delighted that she is recovering so well.’

Animals in Need is made up entirely of unpaid volunteers and is the only Rescue saving dogs from the Letterkenny Pound on a weekly basis, sometimes twice weekly if young pups are left in the Pound and need to be rescued urgently.

The registered charity rescued 720 animals in 2016, and this year is shaping up to be even worse, with over 100 dogs rescued from the Pound and 90 dogs surrendered by their owners since January 2017.

On top of this, kitten season is now underway and in the past fortnight alone AIN has taken in 5 pregnant mother cats, 2 of whom gave birth on Saturday night to 9 kittens between them, plus 5 motherless kittens who needed bottle-feeding, an injured stray tom with an infected bite wound plus they have been busy neutering and feeding feral cat colonies.

If you could help in any way towards Eve’s vet bills and help us to help more animals like her, donations can be made via Paypal at paypal/animals.inneed@yahoo.ie or online at www.idonate.ie/1552_animals-in-need.html or you can donate €2 from your phone by texting the word ‘KITTEN’ to 50300.
