Inishowen Wind Energy Awareness Group have called for a moratorium on Irish wind and grid development to mark Natura 2000 day.
The aim of Natura 2000 day is for every person, organisation or institution to make a gesture of in favour of protecting our natural ecosystems and the birds that inhabit it.
Inishowen Wind Energy Awareness Group explain that as citizens of Ireland and the EU, they feel that today is an appropriate day to highlight their concerns regarding grid infrastructure in the region.
In a statement, a spokesperson for the group said; “To date over 1,500 wind turbines and associated grid infrastructure has been built in the Republic of Ireland in breach of EU environmental laws. Plans are progressing to more than double this.
“The SEA and Habitats Directives have been breached on a nationwide scale and cumulative damage to our Natura 2000 network is unquantified. Is your investment funding this? Did you look the other way and allow this to happen?”
Due to concerns over the wildlife and scenery of Donegal, they hope that a moratorium will be put in place.
