Tributes paid to the late George McMullin at Donegal League AGM

CONTINUITY WAS THE name of the game at tonight’s Donegal Junior Football League AGM at Diamond Park in Ballyare.

At the end of season gathering, which was promptly and efficiently run and tied up within 55 minutes, there will be no change to the executive.

Tributes were paid to the late George McMullin, who passed away last September. He was a member of Dunkineely Celtic FC and also held various positions on the Donegal League. The Fair Play Award was named in his honour for the first time at the league’s annual banquest on Saturday night at the Radisson Hotel in Letterkenny, with Arranmore United its recipients.

“The season commenced with sad news with the passing of our friend an colleague George McMullin on September 8,” said Donegal League secretary Jimmy Haughey. “It was just weeks after the 2016 presentation evening where he was presented with an appreciation award.”

The briefness of the gathering was also helped by the fact there were no motions tabled when the night came.

John Joe McCafferty stays on as chairman, with Nigel Ferry as vice-chair. Haughey will remain as secretary for another 12 months but did say that “there’s a seat here for someone else next year” indicating he would like to see out the development of the playing pitch and floodlighting at Ballyare, which is well underway.

Haughey will have Terry Leyden as assistant secretary and Christina O’Donnell will continue in her role of fixtures secretary. Declan Sherlock and John Lafferty are the treasurer and assistant treasurer for the 2017/18 season.

The area reps are Martin Duffy (Lifford), Garry Rodgers (Donegal), Hughie Walsh (Milford) and Gary Foy (General). Michael Purtill departed as Letterkenny rep last season and it was deemed that with club people from the Letterkenny area on the executive, there is no need to fill the position.

“I’m please to report on another very successful season in the Donegal League,” Haughey said. We had 49 teams competing in out different leagues representing 38 clubs.

“My congratulations to all the clubs who had success in winning their leagues, cup competitions or gaining promotion. But let us not forget the clubs who may not have had a good season. We acknowledge the effort of all clubs throughout the season.”
