7,447 people now using text alerts in Donegal but room for more, say Gardai

A total of 29 text alert schemes are now operating across Donegal.

The numbers of people using the schemes has doubled across Ireland in the past three years, figures just released have shown.

A total of 7,447 people now use the schemes in Donegal.

Nationally, more than 190,000 people have signed up to the alerts, compared to just 80,000 three years ago.

Crime Liaison officer Sgt Paul Wallace said he would encourage any community to get involved in the text alert scheme.

He said there is plenty of scope for more such schemes.

And he stressed the importance of the schemes citing a recent incident when known criminals were stopped in a vehicle.

“We would appeal to people to sign up to these schemes and not be operating their own schemes on an ad hoc basis as we must act within the law.

“We need to clarify this information and we can only do this if we have access to it and to work within these confirmed groupings.

“And they do work. We recently had reports of a car in the Pettigo area which was later stopped in Ardara and it contained known criminals who we believed were involved in criminal activity,” he said.
