Tomorrow, Saturday 27th May, will see many people from all across the northwest and beyond taking part in Relay For Life Donegal 2017.

The sixth annual fundraising, celebrating and remembrance walk takes place at the Letterkenny Institute of Technology tomorrow and Sunday.

The official programme of events has just been released and the complete entertainment line-up is a rich mix of top artists to keep spirits up during the weekend.

Shane Owens takes to the stage at 4pm  on Saturday, before the Survivors Lap and Opening Parade begins the walk at 5pm. The relay continues through the night until the closing ceremony at 4.45pm on Sunday afternoon.

Relay For Life is a 24 hour community event which celebrates people who have survived a cancer diagnosis, remembers those lost to the disease and brings the community together to Fight Back against cancer.

As each team member stays on the track at any given time, the event symbolises that cancer never sleeps. All funds raised will go towards local work by the Irish Cancer Society.

This year Donegal will be giving a warm welcome to Team Nation – 15 men and women from all corners of the USA who have come to Ireland to join the event. Team Nation have raised €5000 for Relay for Life Donegal.

During the 24 hours, people are asked to visit the Lone Table in the centre of the field, take time out to remember and to write down the names of those they are thinking of during Relay. These names will form part of an Ecumenical Service on Sunday morning. This service and The Gospel Hour forms an integral part of Relay.

This year Relay for Donegal are fighting back through Research and Awareness. Funds raised over the weekend will go towards a cancer project in Letterkenny University Hospital directly involving and benefitting Donegal Cancer patients.

In addition to this, on Sunday at 1pm in The Co Lab, Isabella Bray, a Research Scientist and Research Manager with The Irish Cancer Society will host a chat about benefits and progress in Research.

Awareness efforts involve screening and Deirdre Ryan from The National Screening programme will be on site over the weekend promoting bowel screening. All are encouraged to visit Deirdre and Isabella who will be located in The Irish Cancer Society Tent over the weekend.

Stay up to date with Donegal Daily for action from the event over the weekend!
