National Slow Down Day took place over 24 hours this weekend; between 7am on Friday, until 7am this morning.

Out of the 134,739 vehicles checked by An Garda Síochána and GoSafe, 226 drivers were caught speeding.

Gardaí say that some of the worst detections included a driver going 131 km/h in a 100 km/h zone in Cavan. One driver was caught going 40 km/h over the speed limit in Athy, Kildare – who was traveling 100km/h in a 60 km/h zone.

Assistant Commissioner Michael Finn, of the Roads Policing Bureau said “We would like to thank the 134,513 drivers who were found to be compliant and drove within the speed limit and would encourage all drivers to drive safely, comply with and respect speed limits”.

“I would like to thank the Road Safety Authority and all the organisations who were involved in and supported this campaign. Drivers, please, think about the consequences of speeding the next time you get behind the wheel and reduce your speed accordingly”, Assistant Commissioner Finn added.
