Saturday marked the beginning of the sixth annual Relay for Life Donegal, with hundreds of people traveling to Letterkenny to participate in fundraising, celebrating, and remembrance walks.

Relay for Life is a 24 hour event which brings the community together to celebrate people who have survived a cancer diagnosis, remember those lost to the disease and bring the community together to fight back against cancer.

This year all funds will go towards the ongoing research at Letterkenny University Hospital, which will directly benefit Donegal cancer patients.

This year Team Nation made its way to Donegal – Team Nation are a group of fifteen people from all corners of the USA who have come to Ireland especially to take part in the event, having already raised a whopping €5,000 for Relay for Life Donegal.

As each team member stays on the track at any given time, the event symbolises that cancer never sleeps.

During the event, people are encouraged to visit the Lone Table to have a moment to remember their loved ones who inspired them to take part in Relay for Life.

People can write down the name of the people they are thinking of during the relay. These names will then form part of an Ecumenical Service on Sunday morning.

At 1pm on Sunday, Isabella Bray, a research scientist and research manager with the Irish Cancer Society, will host a talk about the progress of research at the Co-Lab building.

Deirdre Ryan from the National Screening programme will be on site over the course of the event promoting bowel screening, with everyone being encouraged to visit Deirdre and Isabella in the Irish Cancer Society Tent over the weekend.
