Former Tanaiste and Donegal TD Mary Coughlan intervened in a frightening situation when a man suddenly took ill in a cafe.
Ms Coughlan came to the rescue when a man suffered a seizure at the weekend in Castlebar, Co Mayo.
The former Minister for Health immediately took action and rushed to the man’s aid when he suddenly fell to the ground.
Ms Coughlan took command of the phone call with emergency services when a staff member in the cafe was struggling with the call operator, the Irish Independent reports.
Ms Coughlan remained calm while controlling the incident. It is reported that the man who was in his 40s was bleeding and people in the cafe were alarmed at the scene.
Another customer in the cafe administered first aid on the man before the ambulance arrived on the scene.
The man regained consciousness and was taken to Mayo University Hospital for treatment.
Ms Coughlan was said to be in Mayo supporting a Donegal team in the Comortas Peile na Gaeltachta when the situation arose. Her calm nature and intervention have been praised by witnesses in the cafe.
