Independent Councillor Niamh Kennedy has received confirmation that work will begin on the Tirconnail Bridge and Fintra Bridge.
Transport, Tourism & Sport Minister Shane Ross signed off on funding for Tirconnail bridge, with further engagement with Donegal County Council expected regarding Fintra bridge, with a view of finding a way to progress that project soon.
Cllr Kennedy outlines that “major rehabilitation works” are required on the Tirconnail bridge, which is estimated to cost €700,000.
She states; “[Tirconnail Bridge] bridge is part of an important link road within Donegal Town. It has been necessary for the Council to apply a 3.5 tonne weight restriction to this bridge because of the poor structural condition of the bridge.
“It is clear that major rehabilitation works are required at this bridge and the proposed option of a replacement bridge deck and associated works at a total cost of €700,000 is the best overall solution.
Cllr Kennedy adds that it will be year-end before construction will commence due to the need to update the tender package and to go through the procurement process.
With regard to Fintra bridge, Cllr Kennedy says that further engagement is needed at engineering level between the Council and the Department.
“A report should be sought from Donegal County Council which would set out further options taking into account the requirements of TII’s Design Manual for Roads and Bridges.”
However once these technical issues are resolved, Cllr Kennedy says that Minister Ross will be committed to supporting the project’s progression.
Minister Ross says “Tirconnail Bridge is at the heart of the community. However, due to the bridge’s age and general wear and tear, it was nearing the point of danger to those using and relying upon it.
“Today’s announcement, and the works that will follow, will improve the efficiency and safety of the entire local transport network. This upgrade will ensure the connectivity in the town is maintained, helping the local economy while also providing safe pedestrian access.
“Some months ago I met with Councillor Niamh Kennedy and a delegation from the Donegal County Council who impressed upon me their concerns for this bridge.
“Thanks to Councillor Kennedy’s tireless work highlighting the need for these works, I am now pleased to confirm that this project will go ahead, starting later this year.”
Cllr Kennedy says “I am really proud to have delivered on this project and will continue to see both bridges to fruition. I want to thank my colleagues in the Independent Alliance team for their dedication to these projects which are so important to the people of Donegal Town, Killybegs, Kilcar, Carrick and Glencolmcille.”
