Cllr Mac Giolla Easbuig: What have trade unions ever done for us?

Councillor Micheal Cholm Mac Giolla Easbuig has been raising awareness of the benefits of joining a trade union.

He says that those in unions on average get better pay and have better working conditions.

The main six benefits outlined by Cllr Mac Giolla Easbuig are;

1. The 40 hour working week
2. 4 Weeks Paid Holiday Leave
3. Maternity and Paternity leave
4. Retirement
5. Pensions
6. Equal Pay

Cllr Mac Giolla Easbuig adds that “it is your right if you feel unfairly treated at work to join a union.

“But joining the union is not enough; get involved in organising your work force and get fellow members active.

“Workers’ rights were hard won and our current government want to take away these rights bit by bit with wage cuts, zero hours contracts and pitting worker against worker.

“Stop the race to the bottom and get active in your union.

“Remember we are many – they are few, and when we stand together they cannot defeat us.”
