CSO figures show Donegal scarred by years of austerity – Doherty

Deputy Pearse Doherty has said the latest census figures for Donegal show the County has been left deeply scarred by austerity.

Speaking today, the Sinn Fein TD said these figures show in black and white how badly treated Donegal has been and how it needs investment.

“Less people are in work in Donegal now than in 2016 despite talk of recovery- austerity has left deep scars on the county.

“Unemployment stands at 18% in our County compared to 12.9% Statewide- nearly 50% higher.

“The figures show there are more carers, more disabled people in Donegal and a lower level of overall health than the average yet we know there is a constant struggle to protect what services we have.”

The West Donegal TD said no amount of spin about economic figures are going to heal the damage done by austerity.

“What is required is investment in Donegal is investment in our infrastructure, investment in our hospitals and investment in our public services. Only Sinn Fein has a plan to do that.

“We know too Brexit is looming and unless Sinn Féin’s call for Special Status for the North is implemented the gap between Donegal and the rest of the State will only widen.”
