Guess who tops the metaphorical list of most expensive GAA players?

MICHAEL MURPHY’S VALUE to Donegal and indeed his club Glenswilly goes without saying really.

<!–more–>

The Donegal captain has taken his native county to the 2012 All-Ireland title, Ulster SFC championship successes in 2011, 2012 and 2014, as well as the provincial minor (2006) and Under-21 (2010) wins.

With Glenswilly, Murphy is a three-time Donegal SFC winner, in 2011, 2013 and 2016, as well as stacking up a mountain of personal honours including captaining Ireland in the International Rules Series and winning two All-Stars – in 2012 and 2014 – and the 2009 Young Player of the Year award.

Over on Joe.ie, Mikey Stafford compiled a list of the metaphorical values of the 10 most expensive players if transfers were more of a thing.

Murphy came out on top, valued at £22million, with Stafford saying: “At 27 his age is a little against him but then you think about everything else. His adaptability (midfield, half-forward, full-forward), his free-taking prowess (anything inside 60 yards is a chance), his experience (an All-Ireland winnning captain, lest we forget), his power (the man is a beast) and his all-round ability (shooting, catching, passing, tackling, rugby).

“Rory Gallagher is more likely to go camping on Tory Island with Jim McGuinness in a two-man tent than sell Murphy to the 31 counties that would be mad to have him.”
