Buncrana-born businessman John McColgan is well known in his adopted town of Letterkenny. Not a bad footballer in his day, John has been giving out financial advice to the public for decades. This is his ‘My Donegal.’

What is your favourite place in Donegal and why?

When I was child my favourite place was Iskaheen near Muff. It was my father’s birthplace and I spent all summer running through the fields, great memories. Nowadays I think Father Hegarty’s Rock outside Buncrana is a magical place.

If you could change one thing about Donegal what would it be?

Its location…..I’d move it 1,000 miles towards the equator.
Seamus Coleman or Michael Murphy?

Michael Murphy, as an unpaid amateur the performances, commitment, and consistency that he puts in for club and county is astonishing.

Who is the one person in Donegal who you look up to and why?

No one in particular but anyone that cares for others less fortunate than themselves deserves admiration.

What’s your happiest memory in Donegal?

The birth of my first child Amy, the two sons are grand too !

Your nomination for Donegal’s most stylish person?

The above mentioned Amy Ni Cholgain is very stylish and most of her gear is from vintage shops.

Favourite journey in Donegal?

The mountain road between Carn and Drumfries. It only takes 10 minutes but beautiful rugged scenery.
The road from Tullydish over Grainnes Gap into Iskaheen always brings back great memories as I used cycleit with my dad when quite young.

Football Special or Kinnegar Beer?

Strange question….there’s no alcohol in Football special…?

What has been Donegal’s proudest moment in recent years?

All Ireland Final 2012 and semi final 2014.

What is your favourite Donegal-made product?

Bedroom units made by DeeMac Ltd at Mountain Top, Letterkenny.

Who is Donegal’s greatest ambassador around the world and why?

It has to be Daniel…he’s the best known Donegalman in the world.

Who is your favourite Donegal sportsperson of all time?

The big man Anthony Molloy.

What is your favourite Donegal restaurant?

Ubiquitous Restaurant, Main Street Buncrana. Stephen McDaid is the main man, always good food and great staff.

What is your favourite Donegal saying or expression?

‘He was full as a bingo bus’

What is the biggest challenge facing the people of Donegal today?

Like in lots of places staying positive when things aren’t going well can be challenging, however my view is that things always work out in the end….

What is your favourite food that you associate with Donegal?

Crab from McBride Fishing in Downing and (previously) Emerald Sweets
Not recommended in the same sandwich though.

Is there anything that really annoys you about Donegal or its people?
Not a thing…we’re all great.

If you had a million euro to improve something in Donegal, what would it be?

A million is not little for the overall health service but it would go a long way towards
the fantastic work done by the Cancer Bus people.

Where’s the most unusual place you’ve logged on to Donegal Daily?
St.Eunan’s Cathedral.

Is there anything about Donegal that you are very proud of?

I’m very proud to be from Inishowen with its fantastic scenery and exceptional people.
