Demand for public toilets on Donegal’s islands and piers rises

The call for a coordination programme to build public toilets on Donegal’s islands, harbours and piers all along the west Donegal coast continues following conformation from Donegal County Council that it will provide portaloos on Gola Island for the Summer Season.

This was decided after a similar initiative last year was deemed worthwhile. Councillor Michael Cholm Mac Giolla Easbuig, the chair of the Glenties Municipal District welcomed the decision but said that a long term solution for locals and visitors was necessary.

“It’s encouraging to see the toilets on Gola Island… but the county does need a long term solution.” “It’s time this council had a very clear strategy for public amenities.”

Cllr Mac Giolla Easbuig then went on to stress the importance of promoting the islands, the Wild Atlantic Way and the increase in tourists it would bring. “The days of somebody going behind a bush is way over.”

“Finally, it’s only respectful to our workers (on the piers) to provide a place for them also.” he concluded.
