Vigil to be held in Letterkenny for Ibrahim Halawa

The Letterkenny branch of Amnesty International are holding a vigil for Ibrahim Halawa at the Market Square in Letterkenny next Tuesday. There will also be a petition available for signature.

It will take place at the Market Square, Letterkenny at 5:30pm.

Ibrahim (21) is an Irish citizen from Dublin who has been held, without trial, in Egypt since the age of just 17.

The Letterkenny group have chosen Tuesday as the day to hold the vigil, as it marks the 24th date set for his trial. His trial has been postponed 23 times since his arrest in 2013.

While on a family holiday to Egypt, Ibrahim and his three sisters attended a protest in Cairo. However, when the protest took a violent turn they took refuge in a mosque.

When security forces stormed the mosque, the four siblings were arrested. Although his sisters have been released on bail, Ibrahim still remains in jail.

A spokesperson for the The Letterkenny branch of Amnesty International says; “Amnesty has conducted a thorough review of all of the evidence and concluded that Ibrahim could not have committed the violent crimes he’s been charged with.

“Amnesty’s researchers have confirmed that Ibrahim was arrested while sheltering from the violence. Ibrahim is a Prisoner of Conscience detained solely for peacefully exercising his right to freedom of expression and freedom of assembly.

“His continuing imprisonment represents an inexcusable violation of both international and Egyptian law.

“All welcome to come and support Ibrahim and sign our petition.”
