Annual Aonach Jack hits West Donegal this Saturday

The annual Aonach Jack (Jack’s Fair Day) will be held this Saturday, July 15th at the world famous Leo’s Tavern in Meenaleck and is expected to attract a large crowd.

The event gets underway on Saturday, July 16th at 11am and it promises to be a fun filled day for all the family.

Aonach Jack first started around 1850 and was a huge annual event in the West Donegal calendar, in fact one of the biggest and most popular fairs in the county.

It was revived by a local committee some years ago in a bid to make it an annual event and is the only such fair in the area now.

The fair focuses quite a bit on handmade arts and crafts but there’s also farm animals and entertainment for children. Local craft makers display their wares and demonstrations are given by various crafters including wood turners and pottery makers.

Loughanure pen making brothers Ronan and Conor Mc Garvey of Donegal Pens are among those who will be showing how they craft their wooden pens.

On the day you can expect to see such crafts as wood items, knitwear, jewellery, fairy crafts, handmade cards, natural health products, home-made breads and much more.

There will also be fun for children, including bouncy castle, face painting, horse and cart rides and farm yard animals.
