Mystery donation sends donkey sanctuary fund past €50K target

A mystery donation of more than €1,200 yesterday put the fund to save the Donegal Donkey Sanctuary past its target of €50,000.

Last month Danny Curran, the owner of the sanctuary in Raphoe, reached out to Donegal Daily to publicise his plight.

Mr Curran, whose group looks after 76 donkeys, said he would have to close due to lack of funding.

He started a Go Fund Me page which we publicised and what followed was an outpouring of generosity unlike which has been seen in recent years.

Now Mr Curran said that having past the magical €50,000 mark, he will close the page and concentrate on trying to look after the animals.

He said “I would like to thank Donegal Daily for publicising our plight and to each and every person who has donated in any way.

“I can promise them that each and every donation will be used caringly to look after these creatures.

“What happened in recent weeks is nothing short of a miracle and it has really restored my belief in human nature.”

Mr Curran said he was simply blown away yesterday by the anonymous donor who made the huge donation of more than €1,200 to bring the Go Fund Me page to more than €50,000.

“I think I know who the person is but I respect the fact that they want to remain anonymous.

“But I would like to thank them sincerely and to everyone who has donated in any way is helping the sanctuary to remain open,” he added.
