A diver has been rushed to hospital by helicopter after an incident off the coast of Tory Island.

The diver was a group of people diving off Tory Island when it is understood he surfaced too quickly at around 11.40am.

There were concerns for the man and the group contacted Malin Head Radio Coastguard who alerted both the Lough Swilly Lifeboat and the Rescue 118 helicopter.

The helicopter reached the man first and the Lough Swilly Lifeboat was stood down.

The man was taken to Letterkenny University Hospital where his condition is yet unknown.

Joe Joyce of the Lough Swilly Lifeboat said “The man was part of a group which was taking part in a deep dive on mixed gases 17 miles of Tory Island.

“The lead diver was not happy with the diver’s accent and contacted Malin Head Coastguard.

“Rescue 118 reached the group first and he was taken to Letterkenny University Hospital. HIs condition is not known at this stage,” he said.
