Illies Golden Gloves man John Moran has been given a bye into the quarter-finals at the Commonwealth Youth Games in the Bahamas.

Derry-born Moran is representing Northern Ireland in the Games, being held in Nassau and is not in action until Thursday evening.

Moran is up against Samoa’s Seanoa Hall in the 49kgs division with the guarantee of a bronze medal dangling for the victo.

The boxing begins this evening with Northern Ireland captain Dominic Bradley and Colm Murphy in action.

The 18-year-old light-flyweight Moran has three years on the 15-year-old Hall.

Moran’s bout takes place at 6.30pm Bahamas time – 11.30pm Irish time on Thursday.

Finn Valley AC high jumper Sommer Lecky is also representing Northern Ireland and is in action on Sunday.
