Independent Councillor Micheal Cholm Mac Giolla Easbuig has met the Mayor of Pouldouran, Lintanf Harvé, while visiting Brittany.

On his trip to mainland Europe, Cllr Mac Giolla Easbuig has been establishing friendships with the representatives of the Basque country in Spain and Brittany in France, as he believes there are strong parallels between Irish culture and their cultures.

He says “I am on holiday with my family in the Basque country and in Brittany. While I was there, I tried to make links with Basque people who have the same problems as us with regards to the language, political prisoners, fishing and other matters.

“I believe that it is important to meet with other activists, revolutionaries, councillors and mayors who share similar values and ideology of other areas to learn from and to build solidarity.

“Brittany is a very beautiful country and activists are fighting to save its ancient language, ways of life similar to ourselves.”

He also met with Briton language and community activist, Jauine Hervê, who showed him the Pouldouran heritage centre where activists are hard at work teaching traditional crafts and preserving their language.
