DD Gardening: Get fruity at Off The Street Food Festival in Letterkenny

Over the weekend of the 29th & 30th July there is a new exciting Food Festival taking place in Letterkenny, Off The Street Food Festival 2017 is a celebration of Donegal Food, from chefs to exhibitors and I’m delighted to be there giving advice on all things Grow-Your-Own.

My focus at the Off The Street Food Festival will be on growing your own fruit, something which we could all do more of.

Fresh fruit, especially berries, can be prohibitively expensive if you wish to get more into your diet, especially things like raspberries and currants.

However in every garden we have spaces which you can exploit to produce more of these nutrient rich and tasty crops.

Whether it’s growing raspberries on the side of the shed, strawberries in a window box or blueberries in a tub; there are lots of ‘awkward spaces’ which can utilised by these harvest giving plants.

No matter if the pot is fancy or basic, blueberries will do well!

Indeed plant breeding has cottoned onto this and now you can easily source a wide range of dwarfing fruit plants and repeat cropping plants which are ideal for use in small spaces.

So on Sunday from 1:45pm come join me on the stage where I’ll be preaching the mantra that “it’s your duty to be fruity!”

For more details on the Off The Street Food Festival check them out on Facebook.

In the garden we are full pelt sowing for next year now, flowers such as Wallflowers, Hollyhocks, Sweet Williams, Teasels and Primula should all be sown now for use as spring bedding next year. So nip into your local garden centre, pick up some of these seeds and sow into small pots or seed trays for planting out into the garden in 6 weeks or so.

Where there we were thinking about next Spring the summer plants will need regular care and attention to keep them blooming away, so keep your tubs and hanging baskets well watered; probably every day now and keep feeding – probably every week and on a daily basis be snipping off old flowers to keep the plant producing more.
