Disgust as Letterkenny Food Bank broken into

Operators of a charity food distribution service in Letterkenny have been left outraged after it was broken into.

Vandals broke into the ‘We Care LK Food Bank’ yesterday and forced a door leading to an office area.

The gang stole an undisclosed amount of cash from the centre which is located at the rear of Alfie Greene’s Shoe Shop at Market Square.

Chairman of the Food Bank, CHristy Galligan, said volunteers are disgusted by the break-in.

“An undisclosed amount of cash was taken and we have to check to see if any food was taken.

“How low can you go that you take from a charity which is trying to give out food free of charge to people most in need?

“It really does beggar belief,” he said.

Gardai have been informed of the break-in and are carrying out an investigation.

The We Care LK Food Bank was set up in 2014 in response to people needing basic food essential who could not afford them.

The group gives large food parcels to between 30 and 40 families and individuals each month and helped out up to 200 families at Christmas.

Food items for distribution can be left off at various locations including the Letterkenny Community Centre.
