Judge strikes out case against motorist after hearing he is almost 104 years old

A Judge has struck out the case of a man charged with careless driving – after hearing he was 102 years old at the time of the crash.

Sprightly Jack Hannigan was involved in a traffic accident at Main Street in Stranorlar on July 10th last year.

The court heard that Mr Hannigan had never been involved in a traffic accident in his decades of driving.

A rather surprised Judge Paul Kelly asked Mr Hannigan’s solicitor, Ms Una McGrory, if he was correct in thinking that her client was almost 104 years old.

Ms McGrory said this was indeed the case.

However, the solicitor said that her client was now no longer behind the wheel.

The court was told that Mr Hannigan, of Main Street Stranorlar, was charged with careless driving.

One female pedestrian was injured in the incident outside Stranorlar church.

Ms McGrory asked Judge Kelly if, considering Mr Hannigan’s exemplary driving record, he would consider allowing the matter to be dealt with in the civil court.

“He has driven all his life, day and night and he has no convictions at all.

“The insurance company is now dealing with the matter.

“Would the court consider allowing the civil court to deal with the matter,” she asked.

Judge Paul Kelly said that considering Mr Hannigan had not come before the court in more than hundred years, he would strike the case out.
