Breaking news: Rory Gallagher steps down as Donegal manager

Rory Gallagher has resigned as the Donegal senior football team manager this evening.

Ahead of a meeting of the Donegal county committee in Ballybofey tonight, Gallagher confirmed the decision to the players this evening.

It is understood that a message was posted on the team’s WhatsApp group.

The Fermanagh native had been tipped to ride the storm and continue in a post he has held since being appointed to succeed Jim McGuinness in 2014.

However, Gallagher – who was due to deliver an end-of-term report to the county committee in September – has decided to quit, after a third year at the helm.

Last autumn, Gallagher was given a new four-year term as the Donegal manager, but following two heavy defeats in the Championship, he has called it a day.

Donegal lost by nine points to Tyrone in an Ulster semi-final and their Championship ended on Saturday-week last when they shipped a 4-17 to 0-14 beating at the hands of Galway in Sligo.
