There is widespread sadness following the death of legendary shopkeeper Joe Gallagher.

Mr Gallagher, who operated Gallagher’s Self Service Stores on the town’s Main Street, was one of Donegal’s best-known characters.

Originally from Keelogs in Churchill, Mr Gallagher is survived by his sister Mary and brother Jim.

His store, which closed in 2013, operated on the town’s Mian Street for almost 50 years and was a proud member of St Eunans GAA club.

“You could get anything in Joe’s. If he didn’t have it, it wasn’t worth having. You could get a cabbage plant, a needle or an anchor in it.

“He had a great wit but he could cut you in two also with his one liners. He was a great community man and was involved in GAA all his life.

“He will be sadly missed. There won’t be too many characters like Joe about again,” said a friend.

Joe’s remains will leave the Eternal Light Chapel of Rest at MOuntain Top in Letterkenny this evening (Tues) at 6pm going to his home at Lower Main Street in Letterkenny.

Funeral details are still being finalised.
