A nine-year-old boy who went missing near Grianan of Aileach this evening has been found safe.

The Irish Coastguard helicopter was involved in a search that was mounted in the area around the historical hillfort in Burt.

The boy, who was visiting with family members, became detached from his family around 5pm this evening.

The youngster was reported missing after failing to return when he went down the hillside near the fort.

Around three hours later, the Irish Coastguard helicopter arrived to assist. With darkness falling rapidy, the boy was found safe and well.

“I can only imagine the distress that this young boy’s family has been through today,” said the Mayor of the Inishowen Municipal District, Sinn Féin Councillor Jack Murray.

“Thankfully though he has been found safe and well. That’s the most important thing.

“I also want commend all those in the emergency services and everyone in the local community who responded to their plea. Every little bit can help in an emergency such as this.”
