The properties have been hot destinations for holidaymakers to the ‘Coolest Place’ as they had been separately rented as short-stay accommodations by letting site Under the Thatch.

UndertheThatch.co.uk was founded by architectural historian and property developer Greg Stevenson, who rescues and restores historic buildings in wonderful locations.

This Donegal hideaway is one such gem that was a labour of love of Stevenson’s. He built the CroPod from the underground up – a space which would blend in easily on a Lord of The Rings set.

The listing reads: “CroPod is a newly constructed underground shelter flooded with light, and lined with oak, overlooking a beautiful coastal mountain lake. The inspiration for the design was the ancient archaeology of Ireland.”

“An amazing Irish mountain pod in a wilderness location on Donegal’s Wild Atlantic Way. A luxury escape for architects, designers, writers and those who love nature.”

The approx 269sq ft CroPod sleeps two, while The Escape can sleep up to four people. The properties are being sold together, which are located beside each other and boast huge open mountain views to the lough below. The secluded Port Beach is just a short walk away and the culture rich Glencolmcille village is under 15 minutes away by car.

The properties yield a gross income of around €30,000 a year, Stevenson told the Irish Times.

Under the Thatch’s Donegal lettings have become famous this summer after Stevenson was featured in the Guardian. The Escape is also known as The Best Irish Cottage as named by the Sunday Times and “the coolest place to stay this summer”, according to the Toronto Globe and Mail.

You can still make holiday bookings here and Stevenson told Donegal Daily that all remaining booking are secure.

“It’s such a successful cottage that it’s very likely it will be purchased as a holiday let and the new purchaser can take on any bookings that remain. Or it could be that somebody would like to live in the cottage and live off the income from renting CroPod,” he said.

The listing describes an idyllic serene setting around the property:

“Stay here to discover one of the most remarkable and beautiful landscapes in Ireland – we doubt you’ll ever find better beaches than can be found locally, friendlier people, or such a sense of wilderness.”

“The Escape is a traditional Donegal coastal cottage that enjoys a remarkable secluded position overlooking Lougheraherk (lake) in this, the most traditional and picturesque part of Ireland, at Glencolmcille.”

Stevenson is looking for offers of over €200,000 on The Escape and the CroPod, if you are interested contact via email at ilovedonegal@gmail.com
