Watch: Torrential flash flooding causes landslide, road turns into river

Donegal County Council and the Gardaí have urged motorists to be cautious following flash flooding across the county.

An orange weather alert is in place, with heavy rainfall and thunder expected tonight.

Motorists in Donegal have reported poor driving conditions, with the main Letterkenny-Lifford road (N14) being completely swamped.

A landslide has struck the road between Muff and Buncrana over the gap. The landslide has made the road completely impassible.

Donegal County Council say that they are doing all they can to respond to the flooding.

“We are receiving reports of extensive flooding around the county.

“Please avoid any unnecessary trips and if you need to go out drive with extreme care.

“There is extensive flooding on road between Manorcunningham and Lifford and extreme care is needed.”

This footage was taken at Race End, Ballyare.

“Our Road and Fire service crews are out dealing with flooding incidents and every effort is being made to respond to all requests.”

Some of our readers have warned us of particularly bad blackspots:

The Liscooley to Carnone crossroads is believed to be very bad at the minute.

Carndonagh to Quigleys Point is badly flooded above the planting, as is the Carn to Ballyliffin road, particularly the end of Isle road, which is very dangerous. We’ve had reports that Muff to Quigley’s Point is also trecherous.

Drivers have had to reverse back from the road between Clonmany and Drumfries due to the level of flooding.

Ballyare to Illistrin road is dire, as is the road to St Johnston to Raphoe.

The Ballybofey to Castlefinn road is also in bad shape.

Head of the Garda Traffic Corps, Inspector Michael Harrison, told Donegal Daily: “It is so important that drivers do not take any chances and that they slow down during heavy rain.”
