Rain Alert: Weather warning issued for Donegal

Met Eireann have issued a status yellow rainfall warning for Donegal as heavy rain is expected to strike the county again.

Further rainfall is forecast this evening, and up to 25 to 40mm of rainwater could have the potential to accumulate in 24 hours in areas of the county.

The rainfall warning comes into place at 6pm Thursday and remains until Friday at 6pm.

The worst of the rainfall totals are expected on higher ground, forecasters say.

A Yellow Warning is designed to warn those at risk to be aware of upcoming conditions and take preventative action.

On Tuesday, when the disastrous deluge hit Donegal and the Northwest, there was rainfall of 63mm in a six hour period recorded at Malin Head. Between 7pm and 9pm, 33mm of rainfall was recorded at Ireland’s most northerly point.

The night of extreme weather this week has left many roads, bridges, and properties vulnerable to the conditions.

Donegal County Council is asking all road users to exercise due care and attention when travelling on roads particularly in the North Donegal area due to the scale of damage from the floods.

Members of the public can contact the Council outside of normal business hours by calling 074 91 72288 or during business hours by calling 074 91 53900.
