Mona McSharry, who swims out of the Marlin’s club in Ballyshannon, won gold in the 100m breaststroke at the World Junior Swimming Championships in Indianapolis last night.
The 17-year-old, who hails from Grange in County Sligo, broke the Irish senior record of Fiona Doyle by five hundredths of a second.
McSharry, a student at Coláiste Cholmcille in Ballyshannon, touched the wall in 1:07.10.
McSharry beat Faith Knelson from Canada and USA’s Zoe Bartel to take the top spot on the podium.
McSharry, in the space of eight weeks has now won World and European 100m Breaststroke Gold, World Bronze and European Gold in the 50m Breaststroke and European 200m Breaststroke Silver.
On Friday, she won bronze in the 50m breaststroke while she goes next in the 200m.
Speaking after the medal ceremony, McSharry said: “It’s wonderful to win here at the World Juniors, to stand on top of the podium and hear our anthem played. I’d like to thank everyone who has supported me on my journey so far; and now for the 200m [breaststroke] – I’m not finished yet!”
