Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams TD will today visit flood hit communities across the Inishowen peninsula in Donegal.
Speaking ahead of the visit, Deputy Adams said:
“The Inishowen peninsula, and some other parts of Donegal, have been devastated by this flooding disaster.
“Ten days on, urgent clarity is now required from the Government on emergency supports for businesses, farming families as well as community and sporting organisations in Donegal”.
“I would like to pay tribute to the emergency services including the Defence Forces, Donegal County Council workers, and management, An Garda Síochána, and particularly the people of Inishowen whose response to the crisis has been heroic and inspirational.
“A large number of homes, businesses, farms, local sports clubs, and community amenities have been impacted across Inishowen and other parts of Donegal.
“There have been at least 300 separate incidents of damage to roads and bridges.
“All of this clearly requires a comprehensive emergency aid package as well as ongoing financial supports from Government but ten days on, confusion reigns.
“Where are the supports for the farming community that has been extensively affected? Will the damage done to community and sporting facilities as well as vital community amenities like Swan Park in Buncrana or Glenevin Waterfall in Clonmany be fully repaired by Government and when?
“What supports are there for businesses as well as community and sporting organisations beyond the €20,000 limit currently in place? And how long will homeowners and businesses have to wait for the emergency funds to be allocated to them?”
“My colleagues, Buncrana based Senator Pádraig MacLochlainn, Deputy Pearse Doherty and the local Sinn Féin county councillors will continue to work night and day to assist their local community and both I and Sinn Féin Deputy Leader, Mary Lou McDonald who visited Inishowen on Tuesday will vigorously hold the Government to account to ensure that they honour their promises and that no one is left behind in this flooding disaster”.
