Charles McGuinness 5k: Where did you come?

The 9th annual 5K road race took place in Glenties this afternoon at 12:30pm.

Part of the Donegal Athletic Board Grand Prix, the 5k is growing steadily in popularity.

A spokesperson says; “The McGuinness family from Ard Patrick in Glenties are delighted that Charles, their son and brother will be remembered in this way every year.

“It is a small tribute to a young man taken from this life in 1985 at the age of just 16, a young man whose athletic fervour for football, cycling and running to name just a few sports has left memories that will continue to inspire those who remember. Indeed when Charles last ran the original race in the 80s he came home first with brother, Jim in second.

“It’s just our way of saluting someone who was even crazier about physical fitness and competition than we are.”

All proceeds raised go to the Irish Heart Foundation.

The first home was Finlay Marshall with a time of 17 minutes 17 seconds, followed by Niall Gallagher in 18 minutes 36 seconds.

The first woman to cross the finish line was Mia Mc Calmont in 18 minutes 46 seconds, followed by Eimear Gormley in 21 minutes 56 seconds.
