Woman attempted to strike with stiletto in family ‘schemozzle’

September 5, 2017

Two Letterkenny sisters have been fined after an incident during which one took off a stiletto and attempted to strike another person with it.

Mary Hutchinson and Philomena Kelly were before Letterkenny District Court due to their part in the incident, which happened on Lower Main Street, Letterkenny, on September 26, 2015.

Hutchinson (33) of 34 Cashtel Park, Lisnennan, Letterkenny was charged with assault.

Kelly (29) of 4 Leck Cotteges, Letterkenny was charged with threatening/abusive/insulting behaviour.

The sisters became embroiled in what was described by Sergeant McDaid as a ‘schemozzle’ after their brother was ejected from a Letterkenny pub the family had gone to to celebrate their sister’s anniversary.

Hutchinson, the court heard, removed a stiletto and ‘attempted to strike’.

The stiletto was picked up and hidden by a passer by.

Kelly had initially attempted to separate the parties.

“A schemozzle developed and there was swinging towards security staff,” Sergeant McDaid said.

“She was trying to separate people and keep the peace, but then got involved.”

Solicitor for Kelly, Mr Kieran Dillon, said the sisters ‘got upset’ about the ejection of their brother.

“It was a family affair,” Mr Dillon said.

“Unfortunately your plans and intentions are one thing, but actions and reality can be very different. This went further than intended.”

Solicitor for Hutchinson, Mr Patsy Gallagher, said his client knew she had ‘let herself down’.

“To try and get across the way she felt, to say that she feels disgusted is an understatement,” he said.

“Comments were made by another person and the comments escalated events. They had a domino effect and the comments were the straw that broke the camels back.”

Judge Paul Kelly fined each of them €250, with the money to be donated to St Vincent de Paul.
