Call for action on Letterkenny flood defences to be heard by Councillors

Councillors in the Letterkenny Municipal District will hear a proposal on Monday calling for action to be taken on the area’s flood defences.

The Mayor of Donegal, Sinn Féin Councillor Gerry McMonagle, has called on the Municipal District to meet with officials from the Office of Public Works (OPW) to discuss the matter.

Large swathes of Inishowen were destroyed two weeks ago when some of the worst flooding ever to hit the county gripped the peninsula (pictured above).

Inishowen and its people are still reeling from the devastation caused by the flash floods.

Councillor McMonagle is concerned that areas of Letterkenny, which are prone to flooding, could feel the brunt of future rain storms.

“In light of the recent Flooding that Inishowen, Letterkenny and Stranorlar areas have experienced and the likely hood of further flooding happening in the future I am now calling on this Municipal District to call a meeting with the OPW to discuss Flood Defences to ensure that all precautionary measures where needed are being worked on and implemented to lessen the impact of any potential flooding in our Municipal District Area in the future,” a motion from Councillor McMonagle, to be debated at Monday’s meeting in Milford, reads.
