A new commercial fibre network will be rolled-out to bring 1 Gig fibre broadband to six towns in Donegal by next year.
The service by enet and energy company SSE will be delivered first to Donegal with Stranorlar, Buncrana, Ballybofey, Donegal Town, Ballyshannon and Bundoran being completed in 2018.
Donegal TD Joe McHugh today welcomed the €100M connection for Donegal, saying the service across the region will support around 700 contractor jobs.
The Government Chief Whip said: “In the coming months, enet-SSE crews will commence the first phase of deployment delivering the new fibre-to-the-premises broadband network to 18,000 premises in nine towns in the West and North West, six of them here in Co Donegal.
“I want to thank Minister Denis Naughten for this announcement today and I want to welcome the commitment of enet and SSE to deliver superfast broadband to six towns in Donegal as part of a €100M investment.
“This is a massive boost for businesses and families in these areas of Donegal. We are working hard in Government to speed up delivery. We are committed to delivering broadband to every home in the Republic by 2021, with the vast majority delivered by 2019 and 2020.
“As Minister Naughten said this morning Ireland was the first country in the world to connect every home to electricity and we will be the first nation in the world to do the same with broadband to every home. That’s what we are working on right now.”
enet-SSE is a new commercial joint venture between enet-owner Granahan McCourt Capital, the Dublin-based technology, media and telecommunications investment group, and SSE, Ireland’s second largest energy utility and the country’s leading developer and investor in cleaner energy infrastructure.
Cllr Martin Harley said: “This is fantastic news for Donegal today, and in particular for the Twin Towns.
“The new 1 Gig fibre-to-the-premises broadband network will bring superfast connectivity to Ballybofey and Stranorlar next year. These are speeds which are world class and will help both businesses like McElhinneys, self-employed people and families in their daily lives.
“This is an incredible investment and is part of our Government’s commitment to deliver on broadband,” Cllr Harley said.
