A Castlefin man has been disqualified from driving for three years after he crashed into a wall and left the scene before being apprehended.

Adam Mulrine, of 1 Emmet Park, Castlefin, crashed a Honda Civic into a wall at the property of Colette Carlin, at Sessaighallison, Castlefin.

Detective Garda O’Sullivan and Detective Garda Doyle responded to a report that a car had crashed into the wall before making off in the direction of Raphoe.

The Gardai followed marks on the road for seven miles to Convoy, where they observed Mulrine alighting from the vehicle, which was missing its front bumper.

The vehicle and its undercarriage were also damaged. Gardaí detected a strong smell of alcohol from Mulrine, who was found to have been over the legal limit.

Mulrine (24) was also charged with causing criminal damage, for failing to remain at the scene and for having no insurance.

Solicitor for Mulrine, Patsy Gallagher, said his client – who wrote a letter to the Court by way of an apology – was remorseful.

“He is getting help and it is a constant battle,” Mr Gallagher said.

“There is remorse there.”

Judge Paul Kelly directed that Mulrine pay €200 to Ms Carlin, fined him €250 and disqualified him from driving for three years.

Mulrine was also placed on a 12-month probation bond.
