Rory Gallagher has been confirmed as the new Fermanagh senior team manager tonight.

Six weeks to the day from Gallagher announced that he was stepping down as the Donegal manager, the Belleek man has been appointed as manager of his native Fermanagh.

A Fermanagh county committee meeting gave Gallagher – who was also linked to a role in the Down management – the seal of approval and it is understood that ex-Tyrone defender Ryan McMenamin is to be part of his ticket.

Gallagher met recently with high-ranking Fermanagh officials recently and was open to a shock return to his home county.

Gallagher was in-and-out of the Fermanagh squad from 1996-2010.

He left Fermanagh in 2002 and missed out on their famous run to an All-Ireland semi-final in 2004.

During his time away from Fermanagh, he lined out for Cavan.

He played briefly for Fermanagh again in 2010, but in 2011 he began his association with Donegal.

He was coach in 2011, 2012 and 2013, when Donegal won an All-Ireland and two Ulster SFC titles. After Jim McGuinness stepped down at the end of the 2014 season, Gallagher was appointed as his successor.
