Newtowncunningham teenager Ronan McKinley has been called into the Republic of Ireland Under-16 squad for two friendly internationals in Romania next week.

Paul Osam’s Irish side face Romania on Tuesday and Thursday in Bucharest.

McKinley is now on the books of Derry City, having previously been at Finn Harps.

McKinley has also lined out for Bonagee United and Kildrum Tigers in recent times.

The Deele College student had been in the Irish Under-15 squad last season.

“These are the first internationals for this age group this season so it’s our first time to work with them around a match situation,” said Osam.

“It gives me an opportunity to see these players play and see how they gel with the group.

“We’ve had two assessment games against SSE Airtricity League opposition and a three-day camp with this squad for two days at Johnstown House in August working on the principles of play followed by a friendly game against SSE Airtricity League level opposition.”
