Major initiative to get Donegal motorists to reduce their speeds launched

A major initiative aimed at getting drivers to reduce their speeds across Donegal was launched today.

The Donegal Road Safety Working Group is committed to working with local communities in Donegal with the continued promotion of road safety and the DRSWG.

And in partnership with An Garda Siochana, the groups held a Speed Awareness event at Liscooley, today in response to concerns about speeding in the area.

This is a joint “safer driving” initiative between the DRSWG, Gardai and the local community to highlight the dangers of speeding and to remind drivers to slow down.

The local community, young and old are vulnerable to cars speeding and not adhering to the speed limit in the village, especially when pedestrians are attempting to cross the road from the Church car park to the Primary School and Community Hall.

Other similar Speed Awareness events are planned for other parts of the county.

Brian O’Donnell, Road Safety Officer, Donegal County Council said speed remains a major killer on Donegal’s roads.

“Too many people have been killed on our roads and one of the most common factors in road traffic collisions is excessive speed. While speeding is an issue in this area, I am confident that with continued education and similar events like today, it will help to deter motorists from speeding through Liscooley and on all our roads.

“This speed awareness campaign, therefore, aims to raise awareness in drivers minds of the importance of keeping within the speed limit. I would like to thank all those involved with this event to help address local concerns.

“I would also like to thank the Gardai for its continued support, working in partnership with the DRSWG to deliver events and initiatives such as this event in Liscooley.”
