Officials from the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport are in discussions with Inishowen football club Cockhill Celtic and a number of other sports clubs.

Several sporting organisations affected by the floods on August 22 and 23 are being assisted by the Red Cross in a funding programme set up by the Department of Defence, with aid up to €20,000 available.

Minister of State for Sport Brendan Griffin visited a number of clubs with local TD Joe McHugh in the days after the flood including the pitches at the Buncrana soccer club.

Minister McHugh confirmed today today: “We have been in constant contact with local sports bodies ever since and estimates of damage caused were submitted to Minister Griffin’s office on Tuesday.

“Officials at the Department’s Sports Capital Division have confirmed that requests for assistance have been received.”

Minister Griffin said today: “I am aware of the challenges the club (Cockhill Celtic) faces and I am eager to assist in any way I can. Officials in my Department are liaising with the club to assess their needs and make recommendations on what assistance can be provided.”
