Volunteers to brave a cold Friday night sleeping rough in Letterkenny

A team of volunteers will face chilly weather as they sleep rough tonight in Letterkenny in aid of people facing real homelessness every day.

North West Simon Community Annual ‘Sleep Out’ Campaign 2017 will take place this Friday, 6th Oct from 9pm in Letterkenny Market Square.

From nightfall to morningtime, a group of volunteers will be setting up camp on the cold streets and are hoping to keep their spirits up by taking in generous donations from passers by.

The Letterkenny Sleep Out will be officially launched at 9.15pm, and there will be pub collections throughout the night in local bars.

This event is part of Simon Week: a national awareness campaign taking place from Mon, 2nd – Sun, 8th Oct.

North West Simon Community reaches out to people who are homeless, at risk of homelessness or experiencing housing difficulties in Donegal, Leitrim and Sligo.

North West Simon Community prevented 186 families and individuals from becoming homeless in 2016 and need to continue to provide vital services in order to prevent homelessness throughout the region.

The clients of the cause are individuals and families who are staying in emergency or temporary accommodation, on social housing lists or waiting in vain for suitable and affordable accommodation to become available in the private rental sector.

North West Simon Community explains ‘they are the unofficial “hidden homeless” – people with no fixed residence that are ‘sofa-surfing’ or relying on the good-will of family and friends.  The charity say that 8,000 people are stuck in emergency accommodation and many more in housing insecurity around Ireland.

A North West Simon Community spokesperson said, “The biggest challenge right now is access to suitable and affordable accommodation and, unless urgently addressed, more people will suffer and more people will become homeless”.
