Carrigans Charity Cycle and Walk in honour of Damian O’Donnell to take place tomorrow

Carrigans Charity Cycle and Walk kicks off tomorrow morning.

The event is in aid of two worthy causes, the Community Defibrillator Fund and the Lung Transplant Unit in the Mater Hospital.

Funds are being raised for the Lung Transplant Unit in memory of the late Damian O’Donnell who sadly passed away last year.

It had been Damian’s wish to raise funds for the Lung Transplant Unit, and Carrigans Cycling Club are now fulfilling this wish.

Originally from Manorcunningham, electrician Damian was very involved in the local community, with the Carrigans Christmas lights being lit as a special tribute to him last September as he had been the first to wire them. He was also a part of the Tidy Towns committee.

Cyclists are invited to sign in at 9am at the Carrig Inn, with the sign in for walkers beginning at 10am. Cyclists who would like to opt for a more relaxed pace leave in a group at 9:40am, with more competitive cyclists leaving at 10am. The 34/35 mile route goes from Carrigans to Nixon’s Corner, Killea, Newtowncunningham, Manor roundabout, through St. Johnston, and back to Carrigans.

There is also a 5k walk which will leave shortly after 10am.

A smaller childrens’ cycle is also leaving around 9:30am, following the cycle path from Carrigans to Derry. As some of Damian’s children were involved in local sports teams, the Cycling Club wanted to organise an event that the children could also participate in. Marshalls will accompany the kids on their cycle.

Everyone is welcome to this fantastic event which will raise vital funds for two great causes.
