Councillor Gary Doherty has described as ‘constructive’ a meeting held between local representatives, community groups and the Minister of State with Special Responsibility for Flood Relief, Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran.
During the meeting yesterday discussions focused on possible solutions aimed at addressing the threat posed by flooding throughout the Finn Valley.
Speaking after the meeting held in the CPI Complex in Castlefinn, Cllr Doherty said the time spent was very constructive.
“During the meeting, local groups very clearly and passionately outlined their concerns about the risk posed to individual homes and businesses by flood waters and future adverse weather conditions, primarily in the Twin Towns, Castlefinn and Lifford.
“As many people are well aware, the people of the Finn Valley have been amongst the victims of some of the worst flooding episodes to have hit this region in recent years, including twice in the space of three weeks in 2015. Despite the damage and devastation caused, there has been a palpable anger at the lack of action to implement flood prevention measures throughout the area.
“In fact, communities here continue to count the cost even to this day from those terrible floods, with many having felt abandoned by the State when they were in need of help from the relevant authorities.
“However, the Minister’s visit today was very positive and it was impressed upon him by all those present that flood relief and prevention measures are desperately required if a repeat of those awful scenes are to be avoided.
“It was also highlighted to the Minister the need to publish the CFRAM flood assessment report without further delay in order to provide some clarity and certainty to these communities going forward.
“I commend my colleague Pearse Doherty for extending the invitation to the Minister and to Minister Moran himself for meeting with the community here and acknowledging the very real concerns we have on this vitally important issue.”
